Unveiling the Art of Brush Lettering:
1. The Basics:
To kick off your brush calligraphy adventure, let’s start with a strong foundation. We’ll go over the basics you need to begin this cool journey: picking the right brush, finding ink that works, and choosing paper that makes your writing look awesome. For basic brush lettering and while you’re practicing, any standard sheet of paper will do. I’d recommend a Pentel sign brush pen or Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen.

Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen
Firm yet flexible brush tip for different lettering and drawing techniques
They are notoriously great for beginners as they have a more firm tip for some of us heavy handed learners, while still creating the same effects of calligraphy we all know and love. Oh, and don’t forget to figure out how to sit comfy and hold the brush – that’s key for becoming a real calligraphy whiz!
2. Mastering the Strokes:
Every masterpiece begins with a single stroke. Our guide unveils the secrets behind various brush strokes, from the graceful upstrokes to the bold downstrokes. Explore the rhythmic dance of lines and curves as you practice creating shapes and forms that give beauty and elegance. I’ve got something special to help you out. We’ve put together a bunch of practice worksheets and guides that you can snag for free. You can start by practicing with some basic strokes. Take your time with exploring the light pressure and vertical pen position of the upstrokes and the 45 degree pen angle and firm pressure of the downstrokes.
Once you’re familiar with basic strokes, you can practice alphabets and then connect them to craft beautiful word lettering. Building muscle memory in these movements for when we flow them together. These tools are all you need to get better and see your strokes turn into a gorgeous letter symphony. You got this!
3. Crafting Letters and Words:
Witness the transformation of individual strokes into exquisite letters and words. Try not to think of it as the alphabet you grew up with, but a combination of movement strokes that upon completion become what you already know today. Remove those cursive habits, lift your pen often and really try to take one stroke (not letter) at a time. You’ll progress in understanding how letters connect, creating words harmoniously. With my free guidance book, mentioned earlier, follow along to go from those basic strokes to your first alphabet, to making words that really grab attention.
4. Adding Flourishes and Embellishments:
Elevate your calligraphy from good to extraordinary by mastering the art of flourishes and embellishments. This comes with time and practice. In fitness, we say to learn the mechanics, do them consistently and then you can add intensity. Think of flourishing and embellishments as your intensity bit and master the basics first. Once you’re there, we can tackle this beast in the separate post it deserves.
For a more simple way to make your work stand out, in the meantime, you can still make your calligraphy feel less formal and more fun. Try adding shadows or using a white ink pen to highlight little parts of your letters. Want to see how it’s done? Check out my YouTube video where I show you the ropes using just Crayola markers. It’s a game-changer to your basic piece, trust me!
